We will be taking part in a project that’s aimed at monitoring and conserving big cats and other wildlife in the area by conducting and contributing to research of the endangered predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs. This is research that will contribute to park and animal management plans and so is vital to providing long-term protection for all of the endangered species in the Maasai region. You won’t be able to nail down an exact dollar amount until you’re sure of what you want, how many albums you need and where your photographer is based, and packages range from $2,500 all the way up to $15,000-plus on the higher end of the spectrum. When interviewing candidates, ask for a general range based on the photographer’s standard “shooting fee” and package, plus their standard rates for the type of album you think you’ll want and the amount of coverage you’re hoping to book them for (day of, full weekend). It’s important to find out what’s included in the standard package, plus the basic range for any extras you may want, like an engagement shoot, special effects or additional coverage, so you can compare rates. In particular, find out exactly how many hours of coverage are included. Ideally, you want your photographer to be there for your full wedding day—from when you start getting ready until after you make your grand exit from the reception. While packages vary, most include about 6 to 12 hours to cover everything from preceremony events (getting ready with your bridesmaids or first-look photos) to the end of the reception. It’s usually better to pay for more coverage if there’s a chance you’ll run over and you definitely want your photographer there until the end (overtime is usually charged at a higher hourly rate). Also consider whether you’ll want to do an engagement shoot or have your photographer shoot other events during your wedding weekend (the guys’ golf outing, the bridesmaid lunch).

Event photography tip : Work around fluorescent lights. If your event takes place in a large conference hall or meeting room, you’re likely stuck with fluorescent lights. Don’t turn to flash to fix this — instead, color balance settings will be key for your corporate event photography. “Fluorescent lighting makes for a color balance challenge,” says Connell. “The main thing you have to pay attention to is the color — use a custom white balance to even out the fluorescent tone you get. By correcting for that while you’re shooting, you avoid that jaundice skin tone color that can be created by that lighting situation. If you’re inside, you can bounce light off the walls or ceiling to make for a more natural feel.”

Cut down on the editing grind: Editing an event is the worst. If you are not efficient in your workflow, you can spend twice or three times more time than it can take a seasoned editor to process photos from an event. To work efficiently, I will immediately go through an event and give the images zero, three, and five stars. Zero images are rejects, three stars are images that I probably won’t send the client but I’m unsure about, and five stars are the ones I send the client. I then go through the three stars and try to find any images that stand out and I go through the five-star images and try to knock some back down to three stars. Once you do this, you will quickly have a set of the images that you want to send the client (or for yourself) and this makes the rest of the editing so much easier.

On the day of your event, we will send our event photographer and their equipment to your chosen location and have our 2-hour session.
