Not every chip or crack on a windscreen will cost you an MoT certificate, as it’s all down to location. The details may seem complicated, but as a rule of thumb you can get away with chips smaller than 10mm in front of the driver. Any damage bigger than 10mm in front of the driver – and also in the glass area swept by the wipers – will be an MoT fail. Elsewhere on the glass, damage has to be larger than 40mm to constitute an MoT fail. Wiper blades must be in good condition – not perished or damaged – and clear the screen effectively. The washers must work too, and the MoT tester is within their rights to issue a fail if you haven’t topped up the washer bottle or unblocked dirty washer jets with a pin!

The reality is that regardless of whether you like it or not, you may have to park your car outdoors for prolonged periods underneath the scorching sun. Consider getting windshield covers that can minimize the amount of heat entering the car, so that later when you get in the car, you don’t feel like a pizza in the oven. You might want to do the same for the rear side and windows too. Everybody who drives knows how important brakes are for the safety not only of your vehicle but also your life. Brakes are important regardless of the season, and summers are no different. Check if your brake pads or shoes are worn beyond the acceptable thickness specifications for your car. If so, you should replace the brakes without further delay.

Inquire about pricing and labor rates. Before you surrender your keys to the service department, be sure to determine the labor rate. Shops typically post the rate in a conspicuous place, so be observant and ask questions if you’re confused. Make sure you understand the way in which you will be billed for an auto repair. Many shops bill according to estimated repair times established by the manufacturer. A repair that the service tech deems “minor” could indeed be an all-day job according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Professional local car service Reading: First, if your vehicle fails the test and repairs need to be made this will take longer. A test centre is not allowed to let you drive away a car that has failed an MOT until the problems are fixed, unless your existing MOT certificate is still valid, or you’re taking the car to have the faults fixed. Second, the test might take an hour or less, but, even if there aren’t any repairs, this does not mean your vehicle will only have to be at the garage for sixty minutes. Test centres can require you to drop your vehicle off first thing in the morning and collect it when ready.

Cold and damp weather can put a strain on your car’s 12-volt battery. The lower temperatures already make it harder for an engine to turn over, but unfortunately, as any EV driver will tell you, cold weather also has a negative impact on a battery’s power output. If you haven’t changed your car battery recently, then it could be tired, and the cold weather could amplify the problem. If the battery struggles to provide enough power to start your car, the chances are it’s on its way out. You can get a home battery tester and most are easy to use. If you do indeed need a replacement battery then, assuming you can start the car, you can drive to your local dealer or car spares shop to buy a new one. Most car battery stockists will also fit it for you.

Owning a car can be expensive, and if the thought of paying out for servicing once or twice a year fills your bank balance with dread, you could consider servicing your car yourself. Of course, you’ll need to have a decent level of confidence under the bonnet, and whether you do it yourself or employ a mechanic, it’s essential your car is serviced frequently to keep yourself and other road users safe on the roads – and ensure the efficient running of your car. Don’t fancy a trip to the garage? You could call out a mobile mechanic to service your car for you. They can also handle most repairs from your home or work.

Check your screen wash level in the tank under the bonnet, topping up if necessary with a quality screen wash additive or pre-mix, which you can pick up in most petrol stations. Screen wash is important all year round. In winter snow and grit cause dirty windscreens, while in summer bugs and pollen can easily smear your view – so never put off checking your levels. It’s easy to book a service online at one of our local approved garages. Find a trusted local garage with the carservice-centre.co.uk stamp of approval. Aside from the vital FORCES checks, it’s also worth carrying out a few additional car maintenance checks on other parts of your vehicle to extend its life and avoid a breakdown.

Why Do My Indicators Blink Faster Suddenly? If your car’s indicators start blinking faster than usual, what does it usually signify? A rapid blink or hyperflash indicates an issue with one of your car’s turn signal bulbs. This could be a burnt-out bulb, a damaged socket, or a wiring issue. Ignoring this warning sign can lead to potential accidents and is best addressed promptly as part of your vehicle service. Our team at carservice-centre.co.uk has the expertise to diagnose and fix electrical issues in your car, ensuring your safety on the road.

Aside from all the tips included in this list, car owners should take their car to a mechanic for a general checkup. If you bought the car at a dealership, they might send you a reminder in the mail to take your car for a checkup. During these checkups, they might inspect the car exhaust, flush the cooling system, and replace any parts needed, such as brakes, valves, and hoses. Regular checkups are in general pretty low cost and can ensure your car is in great shape for years to come.

Best car servicing in Reading: We should all understand importance of properly-functioning brakes, so keeping them maintained is essential, to avoid any expensive repair bills or potential repair failures. Start off by checking the brake fluid level and if low, top it up – check your vehicle handbook for the correct fluid specification Be careful as brake fluid is corrosive, and if you feel unsure then get a professional to take a look at it. Whether it’s 35 degrees outside or barely breaking freezing, it’s essential your aircon unit is fully functioning. However, apart from visual checks of the pipework, there is not a lot for you to check yourself. Aircon system servicing should be carried out by a competent person with the correct equipment. A typical complaint is when the aircon does not feel cool enough on hot summer days, this may indicate that the system requires re-gassing – specialist equipment is required and so should be entrusted to an authorised servicing centre. Does It Matter What Type of Fuel I Use? In the realm of vehicle service, does the type of fuel you use have significant implications for your car’s performance and longevity? Petrol and diesel engines are designed differently, with each requiring the correct fuel type to function efficiently. Using the wrong fuel can lead to severe damage and costly repairs, highlighting the importance of double-checking before you fill up. Additionally, using premium fuel in a car designed for regular fuel will not provide any extra benefits and can be a waste of money.

Spending about $20 to replace the fuel filter can save you a lot of money on a fuel filter. Most experts recommend owners change the fuel filter annually to keep it in top shape. While this is a fast and inexpensive replacement, it’s a more advanced project not recommended for DIY. A professional can take care of the fuel filter when you take the car in for maintenance.

Yes, it’s your car’s bible! Knowing where to find information quickly can help in identifying causes when trouble arises. You may even be able to avoid a trip to the auto mechanic in the first place if you discover that your “problem” stemmed from not understanding your car’s controls. Beyond knowing the make and model of your vehicle, it also helps to have the specific trim level on hand for the service technician, as that often identifies the engine size and configuration, transmission and other included features that vary across the model line. Be aware of your exterior paint and interior color codes in case body or upholstery repair is necessary. Keep your vehicle identification number (VIN) available, as this code will likely be required when scheduling service.

High quality local vehicle servicing in Reading: Windscreen wipers: make sure your wipers clean your windscreen effectively along with the washers. Remember, any tears or holes in the wiper rubber can mean an MOT fail. Suspension check: check the shock absorbers by applying your weight to each corner of the car then quickly releasing it. When people book MoT tests, even if there’s the offer of a free retest, they don’t generally want the hassle of having to go back to the garage. That’s why it makes sense to understand the vehicle MoT check rules, and carry out some simple steps to try and guarantee that vital MoT pass. These tips below won’t help you if your car has significant mechanical wear items, or if your emissions are over the limits, but on an otherwise well-maintained car they can certainly reduce the annoyance and hassle of an avoidable MoT failure.

Keep up with oil changes. When oil levels are low, or oil is old, added friction between moving parts can cause wear and tear to the engine. Follow your owner’s manual to determine the best intervals for changing oil. Check the brakes every time the oil is changed. Take care of your tires. Check and maintain proper tire pressure. Tires inflated within five pounds per square inch (PSI) of their recommended level improve gas mileage and general handling of your vehicle. Recommended PSI can be found in the owner’s manual. Rotate tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles.

Screen wash has a lower freezing temperature than water alone, so you shouldn’t end up with frozen washer jets, although they can still become blocked if there’s a particularly heavy frost or freezing rain gets into them. It sounds simple, and it is. The days are shorter and the weather is worse during the winter months, so maintenance of your exterior lights is an important aspect of any winter car checklist. If you’ve not got the time to prepare your car for winter, then you can ask an expert to do it for you. Many main dealers and high street car spares shops can do this for a nominal fee. Some even offer free winter car checks, especially if your car is due a service around the same time.

Is it easy to service my own car? If you have decent technical know-how, you should be able to complete a basic car service yourself with the right tools and information. That being said, we don’t recommend that you attempt to service your own vehicle unless you really know what you’re doing, and you have access to the right tools and equipment. A lot can go wrong if an inexperienced person tries their hand at vehicle maintenance, from breaking vehicle components to injuring yourself. Also, if some parts aren’t fitted correctly, then it could be dangerous for yourself, your passengers, and other road users. So if you’d prefer a professional to service your car, the RAC Approved Garage Network only includes garages that provide quality work and exceptional customer service, giving you peace of mind you’ll get a service you can trust.

Semi-metallic brake pads are suitable for most vehicles and are widely used in the market. They are also relatively affordable compared to other types of brake pads, making them a cost-effective choice. Ceramic brake pads are made from ceramic fibers, metal fibers, and fillers. They have high temperature stability and resistance to thermal decay, providing stable braking performance at high temperatures. Compared to brake pads made from other materials, ceramic brake pads produce less dust, resulting in less corrosion to the wheels, tires, and vehicle body. During braking, they also produce less noise and vibration, providing a smoother braking performance that reduces driver fatigue.

Due to the use of high-strength materials such as ceramic fibers, low-metallic brake pads have good wear resistance and a longer lifespan. They also have good braking stability and are less likely to experience jitter and malfunction during braking. The noise reduction effect is also significant, reducing noise and vibration during braking and improving driving comfort. Most importantly, low-metallic brake pads have better environmental friendliness. With a lower metal content, they produce fewer harmful substances during braking, which reduces environmental pollution. In the current society’s high attention to environmental protection, this environmentally-friendly type of brake pad can better meet people’s needs.

Compared to traditional non-coated brake discs, Geomet coated brake discs have several outstanding advantages. Firstly, the Geomet coating can form a tight protective layer during braking, preventing oxidation and corrosion on the surface of the brake disc. Secondly, the unique properties of the Geomet coating can effectively reduce noise and vibration during braking, providing a more comfortable and smoother driving experience. Additionally, Geomet coating has excellent thermal stability and can maintain its performance under various high-temperature and high-load driving conditions. Moreover, Geomet coated brake discs are easy to install and compatible with most car models on the market, making them a practical brake disc choice. See more information at https://www.frontech.com/.

Car brake calipers is an important component in the brake system of a car, which works by pressing the brake pads onto the brake disc to slow down or stop the car. Compared to traditional brake systems, calipers can provide faster brake response times and higher braking efficiency. Brake calipers are typically designed with a dual-piston or quad-piston structure to provide stronger braking force and better braking stability. They are usually made of high-strength aluminum alloy, which offers advantages such as lightweight and corrosion resistance.

High-quality brake accessories dissipate heat better than standard brakes, reducing the risk of brake fade and increasing the life of brake components. Brake accessories are designed to reduce brake noise and vibration, resulting in a quieter and smoother ride. Upgrading to a brake accessorie can be more cost-effective than replacing individual brake components separately. Brake accessories are a convenient solution for upgrading a vehicle’s braking system, as they provide all the necessary components in one package. Brake accessories can provide significant performance enhancements such as increased stopping power, better heat dissipation, and improved pedal feel.

A brake disc is a round disc that works in conjunction with brake pads. When the driver applies the brakes, the brake calipers clamp the brake disc, creating friction that slows or stops the vehicle. The braking force of the brake disc comes from the brake caliper. During this process, the brake fluid (hydraulic oil) pushes the piston in the brake caliper, and the piston pushes the brake pad against the brake disc, generating friction. Brake discs usually have high tensile strength and bending strength to ensure that they are not prone to thermal decay during high-speed braking and maintain excellent braking performance. In addition, the brake disc will also wear during the braking process. When the wear reaches a certain level, it needs to be replaced to ensure the braking effect and driving safety.

Your tires keep your car on the road, so ensuring they’re always in tip-top shape is crucial for safety. One of the most basic things you can do is to keep your vehicle’s tires inflated at the correct pressure. However, each car model would have a specific tire pressure, so don’t rely on what you know when airing up your tires. Instead, read your car’s manual or check the sticker that’s usually located on the driver-side door jamb. Underinflating or overinflating your tires could cause premature tire wear and even reduce your car’s controllability under adverse weather conditions. If your car doesn’t have a tire pressure monitoring system, you should also check the pressure monthly to ensure that your tires are at the correct pressure.

During the summer months, dust and debris settle on your windshield, restricting your visibility. This is indeed dangerous as it makes you more prone to making mistakes and getting into accidents. Therefore, you should ensure that your windshield is clean. If your windshield wipers are leaving marks or not effectively keeping the windshield clean, you should get them replaced.

How Often Should I Get A Vehicle Service? Is regular vehicle maintenance really that important? While it may seem like an unnecessary expense at the time, servicing your car at regular intervals is essential for ensuring its longevity and performance. How often you should get your car serviced depends on various factors such as the make and model of your vehicle, how often you use it, and the type of driving you do. To be safe, we recommend scheduling a service every 6-12 months or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Ask questions. Lots of them. Don’t be intimidated. Ask questions about why something needs fixing or how a technology works. As the customer, you have a right to become more educated about your vehicle. Request Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts. Whenever parts need to be replaced, be sure to request genuine OEM components rather than generic pieces. Maintaining exact manufacturer specifications is important in achieving optimum performance. The low-price allure of aftermarket parts often prompts customers to forgo OEM quality, but spending the extra dollars on factory-approved equipment now can make a big difference down the road, especially in terms of vehicle longevity. See extra info at https://autorepairscore.com/.

Check and clean your lights regularly. Salt and dirt can quickly build-up, reducing the effectiveness of the lights and reducing your visibility to other road users. It’s best to keep your lights on in all sorts of weather, because it helps you to be seen. Carry extra bulbs in case of a failure, but do try and learn how to replace the bulbs when it’s convenient, because when one does blow it’ll almost certainly be in the dark and possibly in cold and wet weather, too, not an ideal time to learn about your car.

Nevertheless, prior to embarking on the path of owning an electric classic car, it is crucial to engage in a comprehensive cost analysis, shedding light on the financial implications of this captivating investment.

If you dont want all the bells and whistles even the reasonably-priced base model offers up a WLTP range of 240 miles. But go for the 73kWh model and you’ll get up to 300 miles out of a single charge, while charging is done pretty rapidly with an 80% top-up in under 20 minutes. On the road there might be faster and more exciting EVs, but the Ioniq 5’s impressive comfort, decent performance and easy about-town driving makes it a doddle to get about in. Its one of our favourite EVs at any price. If there’s anything that signifies how seriously the car world is about the shift to EVs, it’s the arrival of an electric Porsche. Sure, some people will hate the mere idea of the Taycan, but it’s truly one of the best electric cars you can buy today.

With all-wheel drive, the next step up is undeniably faster, lopping two seconds off its benchmark sprint time. But it also has a slightly shorter range, costs considerably more and doesn’t feel entirely comfortable to drive quickly. Every version features impressive ultra-rapid charging at up to 250kW, so if you can find a fast enough public charger, a top up from 10 to 80% is possible in less than 20 minutes. Its interior is no less desirable, thanks to a dashboard dominated by a pair of curved 12.3-inch screens for the instruments and infotainment setup. The Enyaq is an all-electric family car that is typically Skoda: that is to say it’s practical, well-equipped, comfortable and decent to drive. With top-spec models able to cover over 300 miles from a full charge, it soothes any range anxiety and just gets on with being an excellent family car – that just happens to run on battery power. Skoda has come up with an innovative way of helping you to personalise your new Enyaq; instead of standard trim levels it offers five individual ‘Design Selections’ – Loft, Lodge, Lounge, Suite and ECO Suite. Each provides a distinct design approach, with different materials used to create a certain style.

There’s no lack of choice when it comes to the electric SUVs on the UK market in 2022. From the affordable MG ZS EV – winner of our 2022 Car of the Year and Best Value Electric Car awards – to the exciting Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y, these zero-emissions family haulers boast a desirable set of attributes: fashionable styling, useful practicality and low running costs. In addition, company-car drivers will enjoy electric SUVs’ rock-bottom Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) rates, while those who frequently drive into central London will appreciate their exemption from the Congestion Charge (until 2025, at least). The number of electric SUVs on the market is constantly expanding. Polestar, Smart, Toyota, Subaru and Lotus are all launching new ones during 2022, while Kia’s upcoming flagship will be a zero-emissions seven-seater and a pure-electric Range Rover is set to arrive by 2024.

When it comes to low-emission vehicles, the industry is facing a Catch-22 situation, said Auto Trader’s director of commercial products, Karolina Edwards-Smajda. ‘The growing appetite of AFVs [alternative fuel vehicles] offer the industry a great opportunity for growth, but for mass adoption, the average price needs to be more accessible to more people. However, with so few vehicles in the market, even second-hand cars are being pushed out of financial reach for most consumers. Current supply constraints mean excellent two-to-three year old EVs such as the Vauxhall Corsa-e, Hyundai Kona Electric and Porsche Taycan are better value new than used, particularly on finance. Assuming, of course, you can get one when you need it. Given the inflated nature of used prices currently, it may be worth buying a cheap old car to tide you over, rather than financing a car potentially with high interest rates and a much higher starting point to fall from when values adjust to a more normal supply of new cars.

If your average daily mileage exceeds the range of your electric car, we’d advise you to think twice, but the occasional longer trip should be perfectly manageable. As the technology improves and the average range of electric cars grows, more and more people will find that they could live quite happily with an electric car. The list prices of electric cars can look expensive compared to equivalent petrol or diesel models, even when the Government’s plug-in car grant has been applied, but looks are very likely to be deceiving. List prices are just one part of the cost of vehicle ownership and the overall cost becomes much more palatable when you factor-in the relatively low running costs of EVs – often around 60% of those of a similar petrol model depending on usage patterns. As a general rule, charging an electric car is far cheaper than fueling a petrol or diesel one – even if you use more expensive public charging points.
